Stuart Roxburgh is one of the newest members of the band and hasn't, as yet, been christened with a nickname When he is, it will be complementary as he is too large a chap to argue with. Stuart was born and still live in Lockerbie. He first started drumming at the age of 13 in the summer of 1992 with Lockerbie RBL PB and took over as LD of Lockerbie in October 1993. In 1996 he moved to Moffat PB and was appointed LD in November 1999 and held the position until June 2004 before joning D&G in August 2004. He works as a Fabricator / Quality Control for The Window Shop in Carlisle, so his views on band issues are usually crystal clear.

When did you start playing and who with?

I started in 1992 with Lockerbie RBL Pipe Band after being talked into it by a couple of friends who were already members. A year later I was in charge!!!

What other bands do you like to see and hear?

Shotts, Field Marshall, Boghall & Bathgate

Who/What has influenced you in your playing?

The biggest influence would probably be Jim Kilpatrick but some of the drummers that have taught me (Alan Barron, Neil Cockayne, Tommy Grant and now Norrie) have all helped me progress with my drumming.

Do you have any favourite tunes or musical pieces?

Steam Train to Mallaig, Walking the Plank, Lord Alexander Kennedy & Mrs McPherson of Inveran.

Are there any particular pipe band or solo performances that stand out in you mind?

D&GCPB winning Grade 4 Worlds in 1994, Victoria Police winning the Worlds in 1998 and the RUC drum corps in 2000. Also the Top Secret Drum Corps have to been seen to be believed

What other hobbies do you have?

Football - Newcastle United, Music, Cinema

What other types of music do you like to listen to?

Anything loud! - Linkin Park, Def Leppard, Evanescance

Do you play any other instruments?

I used to play the keyboard when I was younger but I don't have the time now.

Any amusing moments that stick in your mind from your years in pipe bands?

One year at Girvan when I was LD of Moffat PB, one of my drummers' top head burst before the march past. He went on to the march-past, slightly drunk, and attempted to SING the beatings. I won't name him but he knows who he is! The only other one I could mention (without fear of legal action being taken) was my very first time out with Lockerbie PB on Remerbance Sunday 1992. One of the other young drummers also making their "debut" had walked up through the town to the hall unaware that he had his kilt on backwards! Our DM took one look at him and said "let me guess - you're English" the lad nodded and asked how he could tell. "A lucky guess, son!"

What, if anything, annoys you in the pipeband world?

Inconsistent judges and the amount of hanging about at the march-pasts.

What's been the best band trip (not necessarily with D&G Police)?

Playing in the VJ Parade in London with Lockerbie RBL back in 1995. It was a Massed Band made up of bands from all the RBL branches in Scotland leading the veterans to a service outside Buckingham Palace and the down Pall Mall. We flew from Edinburgh to London on the Saturday morning, played in London, flew back to Edinburgh then played in the Marie Curie Massed Band parade along Princes Street in Edinburgh on the Sunday.

What are the highlights of your playing career?

Getting 3rd place for drumming with Moffat at European Championships in 2000 - my first competition as a LD. Getting 3rd place in the Branch solos a couple of years ago (behind Norrie and Jamie Green) as it's the only trophy I have got my hands on.

And are there any low points?

Dropping one of my sticks in the VJ Parade going down Pall Mall - never been allowed to forget it!

What are your goals within the pipe band world?

Winning a major drumming prize, getting to Grade 1

Finally, if you could be re-incarnated as anyone, at any point in history, who would it be?

Alex Duthart - that will be the only way I will ever be able to get my head round some of Norrie's scores!
